Sean

A hundred questions bloomed in my mind as I stared at Tish, along with a lot of confusion.

The hallway behind her wasn’t familiar. She wore a winter coat that was far too thin to handle the winters Philadelphia could throw at people. That wasn’t a lot of information, but it was enough for me to piece together something crucial.

We weren’t at my father’s house.

Beyond that, I didn’t have enough information to figure out where we were.

I was about ready to ask her when a sound behind me made me freeze, my blood running like ice through my veins.

“Sean?” A low husky voice drifted from the hotel room behind me and memories of the evening came rushing back.

I had seen Tish out with another guy.

And before that? Well, I’d spent time getting drunk and trying to forget shit. Shit like how I’d found out that the woman I’d been falling for had been lying to me all along. Finding that truth out had sent an all-new level of misery ripping through me.

The two combined betrayals left me feeling like I had no choice but to drown myself the only way I knew how. Booze and sex.

In this instance, it had been booze, Blondie, and Red.

Tish stood in front of me, a haunted look in her eyes and that betrayed feeling was gone, replaced by dread and shame.

Tish took a step back but then stopped herself. She opened her mouth then closed it, clearing her throat before she started to speak.

By the time she stopped, I was in a daze. She glanced behind me, and I wanted to move out into the hall, shut the door so she couldn’t see the girls sprawled over my bed.

“Take care of yourself, Sean.” She managed a weak smile and then spun away, hurrying off down the hall.

The look in her eyes had about the same impact on my equilibrium as if Declan had hit me square in the jaw.

Knocked off balance by the naked pain I’d seen in her eyes, I started to go after her.

“You might want to hold up, Sean,” a soft voice said from behind.

I turned to tell her—whoever she was—to fuck off. It was Red. Those flirtatious smiles she’d flashed at me earlier were gone, replaced by a look of understanding. Her gaze was blunt, though, as she glanced down, making me aware of something I hadn’t noticed until that second. I was naked.

“Fuck, fuck, fuck!” Slamming the door, I grabbed my pants as alternating emotions brewed inside me. I had no reason to feel guilty, so why did I?

I had no answer to that, but the guilt ate through me like a rabid monster.

Dragging jeans on took what felt like forever, although I was juggling the phone at the same time, so chances were good that it was indeed taking a little bit longer than normal. By the time somebody answered, I’d managed to drag the denim up over my hips. I stopped then, not willing to risk damaging anything by zipping up one-handed.
